Chinese New Year is fast approaching, falling on the 22nd of January 2023. This is one of the world’s most celebrated festivals, which traditionally lasts for 16 days. 2023 is the year of the Rabbit, which symbolises mercy, elegance and beauty.

If you import from China, it is important you ACT NOW and discover how we can help you.

What happens during Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year is the most important of the holidays in China. Therefore, during Chinese New Year, families travel to celebrate together, causing the largest annual mass human migration. Likewise, many companies in China close, factories halt production and most of the workforce take extended holiday breaks to enjoy the celebrations.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that, for businesses who trade with China, supply chains can be affected.

How may this affect my Supply Chain?

  • Shipping delays may occur, due to reduced space on vessels and the difficulty in sourcing local transport, as drivers are celebrating.
  • Production delays are likely. Up to 4 weeks of possible disruption can happen, due to the closure of factories and suppliers before, during and after Chinese New Year.
  • Factory orders may not be fulfilled/sent out throughout the Chinese New Year period, as staff begin leave for the holidays before factories completely close.

How can I try to avoid these issues?

The delays, caused from the above issues, mean that the sooner you organise your shipment, the better. Shipments can become extremely time sensitive as factories open back up after the CNY holidays. To mitigate this, our Air Freight or combination Sea / Air services could be a great way to catch up on some of that lost time.
