Today, March the 8th, is International Women’s day. Started in 1911, the day is a time to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness for equity, as well as fundraise for female-focused charities, plus so much more.

This year’s theme is #EmbraceEquity and as stated on the official International Women’s Day website, ‘Equity means creating an inclusive world.’

The official definition of Equity: Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognises that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

The IWD official website has some great articles on this topic. We have linked one of these below:

Equality versus Equity: What’s the difference as we #EmbraceEquity for IWD 2023 and beyond?

To celebrate, today is a perfect opportunity to highlight all our talented, dedicated and hard-working female employees within our company.

Emma Chapman, Head of HR, discussed the importance of celebrating IWD and ensuring equity  in the workplace. You can watch our social video on this here:

Martha Rojas, Executive Vice President, from our USA office, was recently featured in ‘The Metal Packager’ magazine, where she discussed creating visibility for female leaders. The feature gave an insight into the challenges Rojas herself has faced particularly at the beginning of her career, when she was in a ‘male-dominated sector’.

Martha describes the societal context during 1988, stating “At the time the logistics industry was a male-dominated sector with very few women having visibility or a voice in the industry.”

She continued, “Being a Latina in a male-dominated industry created its own challenges. Becoming visible first and then having a voice – fighting for a place at the table as a professional, to be noticed and not undermined.”

Martha also celebrates how women “bring  a different perspective to the job and we should embrace who we are with all the positive aspects of being female”.
