The new team were hired and trained in the run up to 2021, as the company prepared to handle a fivefold increase of customs declarations volumes post-Brexit.

At the end of last year, as we were heading towards Brexit, we were unclear until the last minute whether it would be a deal or no deal exit. One thing that was always clear though, was that a Customs Declaration would have to be submitted for all movements from the UK to the EU and vice versa. The vast majority of importers & exporters do not complete customs entries themselves and use a customs broker, one of the specialist services offered by John Good Logistics.

In the run up to Brexit, it was widely reported that the increased volume of declarations into the UK was going to multiply by five times, a level of interest that was also predicted by John Good Logistics’ internal Brexit steering team. In order to handle the significant development this posed, in the years running up to Brexit the company reviewed processes and developed a strategy to provide the best team possible supported by innovative IT systems.

To ensure that John Good Logistics customers would continue to receive a personal and flexible service, the company embarked on a nationwide recruitment process, hiring over 30 new employees, some new to the business and some customs focused team members transferred from existing forwarding teams.

The new team is spread right across the country, but as many of the new hires were made in Manchester, it was clear that, even when Covid restrictions ended, more space would be needed to accommodate the Manchester-based team. A new office in Stockport meant that the company could take advantage of a talented local workforce, and the team could work closely together to support clients whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines.

Training programmes delivered by both internal and external providers have prepared the new members of the team to take on their roles. They are also supported by new web-based solutions, developed by the company’s in-house digital team, which provide multiple interfaces between clients, customs related data and John Good Logistics IT systems.
