John Good Group shares its 186-year family-business history with the local community as part of Hull Heritage Open Days

John Good Group, a family-owned business, is proud to be a part of Hull Heritage Open Days 2019, a two-week long festival celebrating local history and culture.

On Tuesday 17th and Thursday 19th September, we open our head office to pre-booked visitors and share our company’s 186-year history and where the Group is today.

A maritime history dating back to 1813

The Good family has a long and active association with the maritime world, dating back to 1813 when John Good, at age 11, joined the sailing brig ‘British Volunteer’.

After 20 years at sea, working on ships trading primarily in the Baltic, Mediterranean and the White Sea, John Good earned his Master’s Certificate and returned home to East Yorkshire to set up a business.

In 1833, John Good established his Ship Chandlers, Agents and Brokers business at 60 Salthouse Lane in Hull, using the connections he developed with ship owners in Finland and the Baltic states.

Today, the John Good Group is owned by the 6th generation of the Good family. The business has grown over the past 186 years and now operates shipping and logisticscorporate travelship agents and brokers and a charitable foundation from Matthew Good House in Hessle, near the Humber Bridge.
