Frequently asked questions
What are freight forwarders?
A freight forwarding company organises the movement of goods around the world on behalf of an organisation or individual. Sounds simple enough, in reality, though, getting goods from A to B can be a complicated process, so freight forwarders will simplify and streamline that process as much as possible, making international shipping a painless prospect.
Freight forwarders do not necessarily own the vessels that transport cargo. Freight companies that don’t own any vessels are known as non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCC), but essentially the service is the same.
Freight forwarders work with various sea carriers, air carriers, rail carriers, road carriers and other services to transport goods, taking responsibility for the goods and dealing with issues of logistics and documentation. Freight forwarding companies often offer numerous additional services for a smooth and seamless process that can take goods right up to their final point of sale.
If you’ve got goods to move, we’ve got five good reasons to consider using a reputable freight forwarder, find out more in our blog: What is a freight forwarder and does your business need one?
Where does Good Logistics ship to?

Does Good Logistics offer port centric logistics?
Yes, Good Logistics have warehouses at shipping and container ports in Hull, Felixstowe, Ipswich and Liverpool, plus a facility at Heathrow Airport dedicated to air freight logistics. Our warehouse facilities work together with our freight forwarding department to provide a complete port-centric solution for your business.
Our Felixstowe warehouse is perfectly placed to handle freight arriving at the UK’s largest container port and is ideally situated for the swift transfer of goods from quayside to rack. Our convenient location also means that customers can save money by avoiding expensive quay rent and demurrage charges.
Rather than incurring additional charges to bring containers to inland depots, our port centric solution allows customers to benefit from reduced costs, a more efficient supply chain as a result of shorter lead times, reduced carbon footprint and cost-effective logistics and distribution.
Our Felixstowe warehouse is BRC accredited and offers a range of services including storage and distribution, pick & pack, container loading & unloading. Operating the industry leading CHESS Empircia IT system, which offers automated, real-time task management, and accurate, reliable stock and inventory control across multiple sites, customers can be confident their goods are in safe hands and organised by an industry-leading system that offers complete control and traceability of stock within the business.
Can you offer customs clearance?
Yes, at Good Logistics, as well as handling your freight forwarding operations, our experienced teams can handle the completion of export and import customs formalities (NES customs entry, intrastat, CFSP Messaging) at all main UK ports. Our specialist teams of freight forwarders and in-house customs experts work together to make sure your consignment gets through the process as quickly as possible. We also offer advice on importation, taxation and clearance procedures, helping to ensure that your consignments clear customs swiftly and efficiently.
We are AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) accredited, which means our customers can be certain their cargo is in safe hands. That is because consignments handled by AEOs are fast-tracked through customs controls, and when AEO consignments are selected by customs for examination or inspection they receive priority over non-AEOs, making the whole shipping process run more smoothly and efficiently.
Will I have to pay duty and tax when importing goods from outside the EU?
You have to pay duties and taxes to UK Customs when you buy goods from outside the EU, once paid, your shipment will be released into the UK.
The amount of UK Duty you are required to pay depends on the declared value of the goods and the type of product you are importing. You can check the online tariff www.gov.uk/trade-tariff, This can be quite time-consuming, so if you need advice from a freight forwarding expert, give us a quick call, and we’ll be able to advise you.
When buying goods from outside the EU, the VAT due is calculated on the total cost of your goods, plus the shipping cost and UK duty. You pay VAT on the full cost of getting your products into the UK, rather than the cost to buy them from the supplier.
If we’re acting as your freight forwarders, we’ll let you know how much you need to pay and you’ll simply pay this along with the shipping costs at the same time.
Will I be able to track my shipments?
Yes. Our freight forwarding clients have 24/7 access to their shipments including tracking information, custom clearance documents and invoices etc.
The integrated system automatically uploads your data to the web tracking module so sea freight shipments, documents, declarations, orders, security filing, inventory, receipts, and accounting information can be tracked without re-entering data.
It stores important shipment-related documentation in one place so it can be located quickly and reliably. The tracking function is easy to set up, maintain, and control. You can place orders and shipments online and request rate quotations after a simple account setup. All related documentation is uploaded to the system, so you can print invoices simply and efficiently.
